Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

This is a fairly distinctive moth, especially the normal form with the "map-like" markings. The other form, f. gallicus is commonly encountered. The chequered fringes are distinctive. It is particularly common in upland or semi-upland areas where its usual food plant, bracken, is abundant, though it is quite often seen in areas away from bracken, the larvae probably feeding on red fescue and various broad-leaved herbs. Large numbers are sometimes seen in good habitats, with counts of over 100 recorded at Foxglove Covert and Nutwith Common. Numbers are stable.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Generally frequent in both hilly and marshy areas in all five vice-counties and may be very abundant on moorland.

Recorded in 157 (79%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
