Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and fairly widespread resident.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Often common in all kinds of habitat, from the high moors of the west and north to woodland and hedgerows in lowland agricultural areas. Particularly abundant in the uplands where it is one of the most prominent species of moth. Often seen in daylight and at dusk. Although it does fly by night, it seems to be not particularly attracted by MV light traps.

2012 (CHF): The comments in Sutton and Beaumont are still valid. Numbers have reduced recently and it is difficult to be sure whether this is a genuine decline or whether it is partly due to an over-reliance on light traps.

Recorded in 153 (77%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1879.
