Yorkshire Status: Fairly common but thinly distributed or restricted resident.

Porritt commented in 1907 that Campion was "as widely distributed and almost as common as the last" - ie Lychnis. It is probably a little less common now; about half as common as Lychnis. It has rather a patchy distribution being most common in the south and centre of the county. Numbers are fairly stable. Over the last 20 years it has become bivoltine in Yorkshire, with two overlapping broods. It is a moth of open grassy places where the larvae feed on species of campion. It is rarely seen in numbers, 95 of our records being of just one or two moths. The maximum count is 12 at Marne Barracks on 6/6/2008. Do not confuse it with the rather similar but drabber Lychnis. Campion has some attractive purplish marbling when fresh, and the two stigmata are joined at their bases.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Probably present at a low population density over much of the County. Only regularly recorded at Wass in VC62 and from the south and centre of the County (VC63 and VC64). Elsewhere it may well be at least a partial immigrant near the coast of vice-counties 61 and 62 and it seems rare in VC65.

Recorded in 117 (59%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1858.
Last Recorded in 2023.
