Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This beautiful species is high on the "must catch" list in the autumn. It has probably always been fairly widespread in the county, and 1907 Porritt said it occurred "in oak woods throughout the county". It continues to do well, and numbers are healthy, though in less-wooded parts of Yorkshire it is more elusive. Numbers caught are nearly always in single figures however 23 were trapped at Strensall on 18/10/2023. Its specific name, aprilina, is confusingly nothing to do with its month of emergence, but refers to its wings looking like the colour of spring leaves!

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Quite widely captured at light but not common. There are relatively few recent records of larvae or pupae, possibly reflecting the heavy emphasis on light traps today.

Recorded in 136 (68%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1846.
Last Recorded in 2024.
