Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

This is a widespread and fairly common species wherever poplars grow. All larvae in Yorkshire have been on black poplar or aspen, though apparently it sometimes uses willows. Like its food plants, it is more common in low-lying areas and less common in the north-west of the county. It is usually seen in small numbers but can occasionally reach double figures. Numbers in the county are stable.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Only common in the south of the County and here the melanic form ab. nigra (Shaw) and typical specimens occur in approximately equal numbers. Widely but thinly scattered over the rest of vice-counties 61-64 and seems to have only transient populations in many areas.
