Yorkshire Status: Common and fairly widespread resident.

This distinctive and easily-identified species over-winters as an adult. It can be found in the winter in caves, tunnels and outbuildings, often in good numbers. The maximum count is 200 in a deserted building near Richmond. It emerges from hibernation from March onwards, and comes to light in small numbers - the maximum recorded being five. The larvae feed on willows and poplars and it can be found all over the county wherever its food-plants grow. Our population seems healthy and numbers are stable.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded and often quite common in vice-counties 62-64, rather more local in VC61 and VC65. This distinctive species is often found in hibernation, either singly or in groups, in sheds, dry tunnels, potholes, and similar places. It is also recorded at sugar, at light, as a larva and has once been found flying in sunshine.

Recorded in 151 (76%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
