Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

Orange Swift is common and widespread across the whole of the county in a variety of habitats. It is the latest-flying of all the Swifts and is usually easy to identify, though the rather dull female looks quite unlike the male and can give rise to confusion at times. The larvae feed on the roots of a variety of herbaceous plants including broad-leaved dock, dandelion, bracken and grasses. It is on the wing from mid-July to mid-September.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely distributed but seldom common, small numbers are recorded most years in well-worked localities. The larvae feed on the roots of a large variety of herbaceous plants so it is found in a wide range of habitats, reputedly being an occasional pest on lettuces (AMRH, pers. comm.).
