Yorkshire Status: Very local resident.
This is a species of coastal sand dunes and occurs in scattered colonies all around our coasts with the exception of western Scotland. Porritt in 1907 said that it was "common at Spurn but not known elsewhere in the county". This was the case until three were trapped at Markse Beach in 2015, and we have had several records in the Teesside area since then. The Spurn colony seemed to be thriving until a crash in 2018 brought just six records, but there has been a considerable recovery since then.
Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This species is restricted to coastal sand hills in Britain, so it is not surprising that it is found at Spurn (VC61). Recent records suggest it is still flourishing at this site. Recorded in 4 (2%) of 200 10k Squares. First Recorded in 1874. Last Recorded in 2023. Additional Stats |
