In 1883 Porritt labelled this species "not uncommon" but commented in 1907 that it was "little known" in coastal districts. It is certainly widespread nowadays across all of the county and is often seen in large numbers - 301 at Giggleswick on 29/7/19 being the maximum. The largest counts are usually from inland locations so perhaps Porritt's comments are still valid. Numbers in Yorkshire seem to be stable. The only confusion species is likely to be Langmaid's Yellow Underwing which has not yet been proven to occur in the county. If you think you have caught this species, we really need to see the specimen.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded and often common in all five vice-counties. Found in all habitat types but generally in fewer numbers than N. pronuba (Linnaeus) or N. comes (Hubner).

Recorded in 174 (87%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2024.
