In 1907 Porritt wrote simple "not uncommon about poplars". This a moth of lowland Yorkshire and it has not been doing well in recent years, being in a slow and steady decline. It is usually seen in low numbers; over 90% of our records being of just one or two moths, but in good poplar-rich habitat it can sometimes be commoner, the maximum count being 21 at Skerne Wetlands on 19/7/2022. Do not mistake it for Double Kidney which has a hooked apex to the wing and more parallel cross lines.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Quite widespread and now recorded from all five vice-counties. The spate of VC63 records in the 1970s and from further north in the early 1980s would suggest periods of dispersal and colonisation of new sites.
