The first record of this elusive species is described by Porritt in 1904 - "a specimen taken at midnight at the end of August 1896 in Messrs. Earle & Co.'s shipbuilding yard at Hull, was exhibited by Mr JW Boult at a meeting of the Hull Scientific and Naturalists' Club, October 14th 1896 ... (it) cannot be regarded as anything more than casual." This was a typical site for such early records which often came from slime moulds growing on rotting timbers in docks. It was not seen again until 1982, but there have been several records since then and it has been seen more frequently in recent years. Six of these records come from Austerfield in the south-east of VC63 where there is evidently a healthy population. This is a moth of damp woodland, the larvae apparently feeding on fungi on rotting trees, especially birches and pines. Its resting position makes it resemble a Geometrid. Its main home is in the south-east of England and the Worcestershire area.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1987: This is a local moth in southern Britain. The first Yorkshire specimen since Porritt (1904) was found at Spurn (VC61) on 23.7.1982 by B. R. Spence. A second individual was captured at Skipwith Common (VC61) on 13.8.1988 by T. Higginbottom and A. S. Ezard. This is an unusual species which feeds on fungus.
